Can you make homemade “instant” oatmeal from scratch? I was determined to figure it out. After all, I’m a firm believer that real food CAN be convenient. In fact, that’s the topic of the current season on the podcast…

Homemade Instant Oatmeal

INGREDIENTS

2 cups Old Fashioned Rolled Oats

1/8-1/4 cup maple sugar or coconut sugar

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 tsp cinnamon

1/2 cup add ins (see below)

DIRECTIONS

  1. Toast 2 cups of old-fashioned rolled oats at 350, for 15 minutes.
  2. After oats have cooled, pulse half of them in your food processor briefly, to coarsely chop them.
  3. Place all oats together in a bowl and stir in the rest of the ingredients.
  4. Store in a mason jar.
  5. To prepare, scoop a few tablespoons into a bowl and add enough hot water to make your oatmeal the consistency you like.

IDEAS FOR ADD-INS:

  • walnuts (you can chop these with the oats),
  • sunflower seeds,
  • pumpkin seeds (I use these),
  • dehydrated strawberry powder (find directions to make dehydrated strawberry powder here),
  • chopped up dried fruits, such as peaches, strawberries, or blueberries (read more about adding dried fruit in notes, below)

Notes for Homemade Instant Oatmeal

Toasting the oats is definitely optional, but trust me that added umpf in taste is well worth the extra effort.

Feel free to double this recipe to fill up a quart-size mason jar with your ready-made, homemade oatmeal.

You can add dehydrated fruit (on any add-in, really) to the stored mix or wait and add in whatever add-ins you’re in the mood for as you prepare each bowl. Bonus, if you add dried fruit right before serving, instead of into your dried mix, you can rehydrate it a few minutes, in a tiny bowl of hot water, so it’s nice and soft in your oatmeal.

These sealed, flip-top mason jar lids are my favorite way to store not only meat rubs, but all my homemade seasonings, homegrown herbs, and my favorite loose leaf teas. Grab a 4-pack and it’s even better than getting one free!
