Don’t mind me… over here late to the party… I would have jumped on the Everything But the Bagel bandwagon years ago… But I didn’t even know it existed!
There I was shopping at my favorite grocery store in the world (Aldis) when I spied a little jar of this amazing stuff. I stopped dead in my tracks. Apparently this has been a “thing” for a long time, and Kayla and Hayley, my daughters who was with me at the time, acted like I was crazy for not knowing this. I immediately had to try making my own and experimenting with how I wanted to use it.
It turns out I’m pretty much in love with this new jar of delicious spices in my cabinet and I have lots of favorite ways to use it.

What is everything seasoning made from?
Tips for making your own everything seasoning
I’m sure there’s a lot of leeway with how you want to concoct your own, but I’ll share what I’ve decided is the tastiest way to make this wonderful topping.
First of all, don’t even consider using garlic salt or onion salt in place of the minced variety. Not that I’m admitting I tried this. Okay, I’ll just admit it. I actually thought maybe the super-fine garlic salt would somehow stay mixed up well in my concoction.
Not.
And any other salt than this one is right here is just not the same; it’s superior to other options… Okay, I can’t really attest to this, because of course I’ve not actually tried every variety of salt in the world. But I can tell you I tried with three different coarsenesses (is that a word?) of salt in this recipe before deciding this kosher salt is the bomb. (Insert Kayla & Hayley rolling their eyes at mom saying ridiculous things.)
Check out this discount!
When I told Redmond’s how much I love their kosher salt in this recipe they wanted to offer everyone an awesome discount, in case you all want to try it out too…
Simply use this link to place any order at Redmond’s Real Salt and use code SOULYRESTED to enjoy a sweet discount.
But kosher salt adds just the right size crystals of salt to offer a perfect little burst of salt amidst the other seasonings. (By the way I found out that world-renowed chef, Thomas Keller, who owns an infamous restaurant in Napa, prefers to work with kosher salt too. Mind you, he knows a lot more fancy recipes than I ever will, but I guess I have good taste in salt.)
And, finally, feel free to change this recipe up a little in any way that would make it your family’s favorite. That’s the real beauty of making your own food instead of buying it; you can make something like you will find nowhere else and it can be tailored to your family’s taste.
Michelle’s tips:
- Stick with minced garlic and onion, not garlic salt or onion salt.
- Go with kosher salt. Regular grain salt won’t be large enough for this recipe.
- Play with the amounts until it’s just the way you love it. That’s the best part of any homemade option, right?

Storing your Everything Seasoning
The recipe below will make just about the perfect amount to store in a cute little quarter pint jar. You may have some squatty little canning jelly jars like this in your pantry that would work perfectly. Or these little mason jars are perfect. I actually double this recipe when I make it, and then I store it in a 1/2-pint mason jar with my favorite mason jar accessory on top. (Did you know Mason Jars have accessories?) My lid is actually two items in one: this flip lid and this shaker insert.
I keep my jar in my spice cabinet and it has kept for many months very nicely. I can’t tell you beyond that, because we are going through this like crazy all the time. Which leads me to the next point…
Using Everything Seasoning
Honestly, I find I love it anywhere I’d add extra garlic salt, for an awesome change and a little extra burst of flavor and crunch to the food. But here are some of my current favorite ways to use my DIY Everything Seasoning:
- On our Friday-night homemade pizza. See my favorite pizza crust recipe right here.
- On my favorite sandwich: sourdough bread, shredded chicken, and avocado with pickles.
- On a slice of toast with fresh Maple Peanut Butter.
- On scrambled eggs.
- On slices of fresh garden tomatoes.
- On roasted veggies.
- On grilled chicken.
- On baked potatoes.
Of course it obviously is perfect for topping homemade bagels. (Bagel recipe to come.)

Where I get the ingredients
I love ordering from Azure Standard, a family-owned company and an independent food supply chain that connects food suppliers directly to consumers. Go here to find out more about Azure and my 12 favorite items I always source from them.
Depending on where you live, you probably have a drop-off location for Azure close to you. Go here to find your nearest drop location.
But you can, of course, also get some minced garlic here and some minced onion here.
What’s in Trader Joe’s everything bagel seasoning?
Trader Joe sells and everything seasoning that’s just like the one I first spied at Aldis and very similar to this DIY recipe. The only difference, as far as I can tell, is that Trader Joes includes black sesame seeds.
Is everything bagel seasoning healthy?
The seeds and veggies in this simple recipe contain vitamins, fiber, salt that adds over 64 trace minerals, and healthy fats. Go here for lots of insights into why fats matter.
Plus, if you’re making this everything seasoning yourself, you can also make sure your ingredients are all organic and there is zero questionable junk in your seasoning. So yes, this seasoning is the good stuff.
