Regarding the phrase "missionary field" my query is completely different. I am a historian in a small Vermont town. I came across the following while trying to resolve the provenance of a piece of land in town. The description of a piece of property reads, "being land deeded to Simon Stevens by George Greenbank called the old orchard and missionary field." The transaction is dated August 17, 1864. What might a piece of land known as "the missionary field" have been used for? According to the current owner, this same piece of land wraps around a cemetery, and there is an old fence back there. Another exception regarding this piece of land on which there is the so-called old orchard and missionary field reads, "except the old graveyard is to remain as a public graveyard—as now fenced" (28 October 1864). What is a "missionary field" in this context? Please reply to my email address speakvt@sover.net

America is the mission field. We live and minister on the streets and market places of the southeast and can tell you from experience that the two most dangerous places in our country is now the Womb and the brick and mortar Church. In fifty years of knowing Him we have never witnessed such widespread paganism. This is truly the Laodicean church age. We ask people a simple question when sharing the Gospel, "Are You Born Again?", and almost, the exclusive answer is either, "I'm Baptized" or "What Is Born Again". We have a call-in Bible study that is Prophecy centered and is a book by book continuous study. The people that have joined us from five states have been members of evangelical churches for many years, yet their Bible knowledge is so shallow we are amazed. The mission field is all people, Christians and pagans, the field is white for harvest. Maranatha

New Hampshire native and pastor's wife here, doing mission work in an old New England church that saw numerous revivals in past centuries. The old wells that have been filled in can be re-dug if He is the one who sends us. I lean on the fact that we are still here and God has people to save here in New England. May He pour His Spirit out onto souls, ignite hunger and turn them to Christ.
And, yeah, if you use the front door in New England, you're probably a stranger. Even my mailman opens my garage door to put packages inside!

i really identify with this article. we live in the mid-west and folks are very determined individualists here too! we also live in an old ( over 100yrs old ) house and the front door wasn't able to be opened for years! LOL we used the side door and our kids have trouble thinking of the formal front door as the 'front door'. we thought that when we moved here we'd jump right in as 'missionaries' to the unchurched , sadly it is mostly older folks who attend and our 2 'onlies'(14 yrs apart) did need more in a church than a bunch of adopted grannies. so we started traveling further to have more programs etc. we were just so tired from homesteading and working and homeschooling that it was hard to build up the local churches where folks want no changes....ever. but, we did find community and are now in a small local church where we can plug in and reach the community. everyone in farm-land-USA is so far apart and tired and ready to just stay home on Sundays, so i get what they feel and appreciate the encouragement to continue to pray for my neighbors! many are cultural Christians and conservative...but community is important and i will pray they see the need to connect and to truly know our Saviour as their own.

I honestly have no idea why we don't use front doors, lol! I grew up here and it never even crossed my mind until my friend brought it up! It's more of a "formal" thing. Ironically, almost everyone around here turns the front door light on and uses it for trick or treating.

Michelle, your article was both informative and convicting for me. It stimulated some deep thinking and soul searching. I appreciated your honesty about the status of it all. It's important to keep these messages in front of fellow believers. We often look the other way or lay it on our pastor's shoulders when it comes to actually spreading the gospel. Or we plan one isolated attempt through some extravagant mission trip. You gently, but clearly reminded us there is much work to be done here, right where we live. Thank you. While I appreciate all of your content. I'm thankful for this article the most. Because at the end of it all, when we are standing in front of our creator, he's not going to ask how our bean crop faired or our sourdough turned out. (Although those are important and beautiful things.) No, he'll be asking what we did in His name for His glory and did we yeild to the great commission.

So nice to "meet" you Jeanne. And I'm so glad that us folks in the homesteading "influencer" world are encouraging to you... I personally don't know how one could do this thing called "homesteading" and not see our Creator's provision for us all over every minute of every day.
