My 2 cents. I’ve been storing grain in buckets in my unheated garage in Alaska for over 30 years. It freezes hard here in the winter. Thankfully, we haven’t had any pest issues, mold issues or moisture issues when storing our grain. We’ve even sprouted grain from buckets that had been stored for decades through several years of freeze thaw cycles. Thankfully, we don’t get the heat that others have to put up with in the summer months. So far so good!

I’ve put some grain in the freezer and some not. Mostly not;) I have gotten bugs that have destroyed a whole bucket. I’ve only gotten my grains from Azure, I have had some trouble with grains and always the brown rice, so I just don’t get brown rice anymore.

Either way is possible, but I'm glad you were able to contain the issue before it got bigger. I've personally never had an issue with Azure, but I have heard of folks who have. If you're looking for alternatives for affordable grains, check my favorites here: https://soulyrested.com/grains-shop/

I get my grain from Azure Standard. I have 3 bins I got from Amazon that claim to be airtight, but I am learning that they may not quite cut it. I recently found a small infestation of grain weevils in one bin. Thankfully only had a small amount left. The others look good. It’s my understanding that this is a reputable source, but I’m guessing even with amazing sourcing, this can sometimes happen. From my research it seems most likely the bugs were present in the grain when purchased. Or do you think it’s possibly my bins were the problem?

I'm not a fan, honestly. A low-oxygen, high-moisture environment (over 10%) can invite botulism. Since wheat berries are ideally 10-14% moisture, it seems possible to me that oxygen absorbers and wheat berries might not be a good combination. So I'd rather deter bugs naturally (they hate bay leaves and/or cloves. and diatomaceous earth is always a good option.)
